New Running Route

I went for my long run this morning. Saturdays are the days for this weekly ritual in preparation for my half marathon. I decided to change my route and climbed to the top of Cerro San Cristobal today. There are pictures of this characteristic Santiago hill already posted, and some quick online searches and conversions made me realize that my climb was 1200 feet. It was a pretty good workout, needless to say, but I basically knew what I was in for, as I had walked up it a couple weeks prior. At that time, seeing some die-hard runners amidst the walkers and bikers, I thought to myself, “I should try that.” It’s that same, silly mode of thinking that convinces me to run marathons. Don’t ask me to explain it. It’s certainly not fun while you’re doing it, but it’s satisfying when it’s all said and done.

The American guy that I met earlier in the week told me that he had run to the top already, and to put it in his words, “When you reach the top, it’s just you, the city, and Mary.” If I were to change any part of that, I would add smog.

Perhaps training in the smog will make you 'ultra conditioned' for the race? :-p Good luck on it!
